What's new for the 2021 Ford Explorer?
In 2020, the Ford Explorer saw a bumper-to-bumper redesign with an abundance of notable improvements. Among these were a return to rear-wheel-drive for improved handling and towing stability, a more powerful and efficient 2.3L turbo-four and new 10-speed automatic, and a generous assortment of features across its trim levels. With all these updates, one might expect the following model year to be a bit of a carryover, but Ford still had some goodies up its sleeve for this three-row midsize SUV.
The 2021 Explorer sees a new addition to its trim lineup, the King Ranch. Previously the realm of Ford F-Series trucks, King Ranch models feature a western them with unique leather upholstery and wood trim, a digital gauge cluster, rear automatic emergency braking, as well as the Platinum tier's 365-horsepower turbo-V6. Elsewhere in the 2021 lineup, the Explorer's available V6 hybrid powertrain, previously only offered in the Limited trim, is now available in a Platinum variant. And the XLT now offers a Sport Appearance package with Carbonized Gray 20-inch alloy wheels, a mesh grille, unique lower cladding, and dual exhaust.
Two additional trim levels, the Enthusiast ST and Timberline, are expected to join the 2021 Explorer sometime in the summer. The Enthusiast ST provides a more affordable way for Dallas GA drivers to enjoy the sporty ST experience by combining the performance equipment of the ST with the amenities of the XLT. Additionally, the new off-road-focused Timberline imbues the 2021 Explorer with more trail-tackling capability. The Explorer Timberline equips standard all-wheel-drive, Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, steel skid plates, red tow hooks, and a factory lift with upgrade shocks from the Police Interceptor.

Though the Enthusiast ST and Timberline are launching later than the rest of the lineup, Ford has tagged them as 2021 models. There's not much public information regarding 2022 updates, but Ford has confirmed it's working on a new all-electric variant.
